Looking Glass Falls
Located in Pisgah National Forest about 15 minutes from Asheville, Looking Glass Falls remains one of the most popular and easily accessible waterfalls in the area. The 60-foot free-falling cascade ends with a big splash into a wide pool below, making it a fun and scenic spot for photos. Well-maintained trails and observation platforms at the base of the falls provide prime waterfall viewing with short quarter-mile round trip hikes.
Triple Falls
Deep in the quiet Green River Cove of DuPont State Forest lies 120-foot tall Triple Falls, considered one of the most striking waterfalls in the state. The name comes from the unique terrace-style triple drop. The quartz streaks on the rock face make the cascading water shimmer on sunny days. Plan for moderate 4-mile round trip hike with steep, rocky sections. But the challenge is well worth getting to marvel at the photogenic Triple Falls.
Whitewater Falls
At 411 feet, Whitewater Falls earns the title of highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. Located in Nantahala National Forest, the powerful falls rush and roar over rock outcroppings. Multiple observation decks along the 1-mile loop trail provide different vantage points. The easy paved path makes it one of the most accessible waterfall views, though be prepared for many steps up and down.
Paradise Falls
Tucked within the mountains of the Blue Ridge Parkway, Paradise Falls delights visitors with a 50-foot cascade surrounding by lush forest. The moderately difficult 2.2 mile roundtrip hike crosses log bridges and navigates rocky slopes. But the secluded falls rewards visitors with a peaceful swimming hole perfect for wading beneath the misty plunge.
Moore Cove Falls
Plunging 50 feet into a misty pool, Moore Cove Falls charms hikers along Pisgah National Forest’s Looking Glass Rock Trail. The view of the powerful cascade emerging from the thick forest canopy makes the strenuous 7 mile roundtrip hike worthwhile. Carefully navigate the steep, slick descent to the base for the full experience.
Skinny Dip Falls
We saved the best for last- Skinny Dip Falls. Don’t get any ideas though, it’s not an official clothing-optional spot!
Skinny Dip Falls is located at Milepost 417 on the Blue Ridge Parkway near the Looking Glass Rock overlook. This refreshing waterfall has cascading tiers, many of which have their own pools of water to relax in. The cascades end in a swimming hole, perfect for cooling off in the summer.
We’ve never seen a waterfall quite like this anywhere else we’ve traveled and it’s always a must do when we’re in the area. Our kids love it too!
