WE WERE NERVOUS, IT WAS OUR FIRST TIME… STOPPING AT A BUC-EE’S.

MAYBE YOU’RE LIKE US… YOU’RE FROM THE NORTH AND YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHAT A BUC-EE’S IS. WELL, LET US FILL YOU IN! BUC-EE’S IS LIKE A SHEETZ OR A WAWA ON STEROIDS. NOT ONLY IS IT A FUEL STATION, BUT IT’S ALSO A CONVENIENCE STORE, IMPRESSIVE GIFT SHOP AND HOME TO SOME OF THE BEST BARBECUE YOU’LL FIND. IF YOU’VE NEVER BEEN TO A BUC-EE’S, NEXT TIME YOU PASS THE ICONIC BEAVER ON THE HIGHWAY, IT’S HIGH TIME YOU MAKE A STOP.

There’s a lot of hype surrounding Buc-ee’s and we weren’t really sure what to expect. As I mentioned before, the only thing we really had to compare it to was a Sheetz. So, we were personally expecting Buc-ee’s to be like a larger version of Sheetz. However, when we pulled into the parking lot, we realized it wasn’t going to be like that at all.

Pulling into the parking lot, you will see the largest fuel station with the most pumps and parking spaces of any gas station in the world. Pull up to a pump, fuel up on gas or diesel and even top off your DEF tank.

Despite there being hundreds of parking spots, they’re usually all pretty full! While they don’t allow commercial vehicles or semi trucks, they are happy to allow RV’ers a place to stop, fuel up and grab a bite to eat before getting back on the road. The parking lots at Buc-ee’s are pretty full, but we have always been lucky enough to find spots along the periphery that can accommodate our RV.

Inside, you’ll be amazed at what you can find. No joke, I could do all of my Christmas shopping in a Buc-ee’s!

When we first entered Buc-ee’s, the first thing we saw was the home goods section full of Texas themed items, clothing, bath items and decorations. You might be thinking to yourself, “How good can these items be from a gas station?” But honestly, they’re actually really nice! They are mostly high quality items from well-known brands you probably already purchase.

The majority of the rest of the store is filled with a variety of food products. The sweets counter is filled with homemade fudge, pralines, Dippin’ Dots, ice cream bars, roasted nuts and other homemade candies.

Buc-ee’s has their own beef jerky bar where you can purchase beef jerky by the pound or in pre-packaged portions. They also have made to order tacos and sandwiches.

The Buc-ee’s bakery case has everything from cinnamon rolls to cookies to kolaches. Side note – kolaches are some thing we had never heard of or tried before prior to stopping at Buc-ee’s but would highly recommend! They are sausages with different fillings wrapped in dough and are delicious! (*edit- one of our readers helped us learn these are actually klobasnik!)

The most popular area, by far, is the brisket and pulled pork sandwich counter. The employees were making them at record speed but it still wasn’t fast enough for all the people taking them off the shelves. Seriously, you ‘d think there were Willy Wonka’s golden tickets hidden in these sandwiches or something. It’s totally justified though. The owners actually hired an award-winning barbecuer to develop the menu and recipes for Buc-ee’s .

We got both brisket and pulled pork sandwich and were certainly not disappointed. The quality of the barbecue at Buc-ee’s is better than you’d find at most restaurants.

There’s also a soda foundation, refrigerated area and grab-and-go prepared foods area. The walls are lined with varieties of trail mix, dried fruits, old time candies and… Beaver Nuggets.

Let’s take a second to talk about Beaver Nuggets. They are your new favorite road trip snack, you just don’t know it yet! The inside is puffed corn and the outside is covered in crunchy, buttery, sweet and salty caramel coating. Grab more than one bag, you might not want to share. And if caramel isn’t your thing, they sell other flavors, too.

One of Buc-ee’s claims to fame is their restrooms. They have been awarded the honor of cleanest bathrooms and it’s easy to see why. They are spacious, filled with plenty of stalls, tiled nicely and are actually very clean for a public restroom. Buc-ee’s takes so much pride in this that as you’re driving down the road, you can almost guarantee you’ll pass a billboard with a clever slogan about the Buc-ee’s bathrooms. Our favorite? “Potty like a Rockstar!”

We were really pleased with our first trip to Buc-ee’s and now we make it a point to stop whenever we pass one. Even our daughter asks when we can stop at a Buc-ee’s next! So, if you’re passing a Buc-ee’s on your next adventure, stop in and see what it’s all about!
